Age 92, of Nashville passed away July 26, 2019.
He was born on May 16, 1927, in LaFayette, Alabama, and was baptized in 1937 and joined the Sandy Ridge Methodist Church. He was called to preach the Gospel as a teenager and was given license to preach in The Methodist Church in 1947. His first appointment was to the Maben Charge in Alabama in 1949 and he entered Vanderbilt School of Religion and was appointed to the Kingston Springs Circuit. In 1950, Joe was admitted on trial in the North Alabama Conference and graduated from Birmingham-Southern College. This was also the year he held the revival and helped New Bethel get restarted after World War II and when he met Martha Johnson! In 1952, he graduated from Vanderbilt School of Religion with a B.D. degree (now it is an M.Div.) What a busy young man our Bro. Joe was! In 1954, Joe was admitted in full connection to the North Alabama conference and ordained an Elder. He was appointed pastor to the Unionville Tennessee Circuit, where he and Martha were married in 1956. They spent the next years serving in Birmingham until 1962 when he transferred to Hohenwald, TN, and later served at West End, South End, Neely's Bend-Ruth Ensor, Tulip Street, Bordeaux-Jordonia, New Prospect-Mars Hill, Pegram, Craggie Hope and Scottsboro. During this period, he received his doctorate from Fuller Theological Seminary in California. Since then, he has blessed us many times with his presence, his music and his witness.
