George Campbell McGill, age 86 of Nashville, passed away May 24, 2017 at the Residence at Alive Hospice.

George was born in Shelbyville, TN on December 18, 1930 and was one of four children of Fred Ashburn McGill Sr and Georgie Campbell McGill.

He was raised on the prison farm of the Tennessee State Prison, where his father served as the Superintendent of Farms. There he learned the value of hard work and service. Following graduation from Bellevue High School in 1950, he joined the United States Air Force, for four years, serving as a mechanic during the Korean War and enjoying playing baseball on the base team at Briggs Air Force Base, as catcher.

Newly inducted into service, George decided to make his high school sweetheart of three years, Dora Mai Sawyer, his wife. They married on July 20, 1951 and journeyed through life until the time of his passing - a beautiful 65 years together.

Their union was blessed with four children: Kenneth, Vicki, Shirley and Dorene. He led his family by example of Godliness and service. George is best described as "a man who loved God, family, baseball and organizing and driving on trips." He played semi-pro baseball early in life and was an avid Vanderbilt fan.

George faithfully served his Lord as a husband and father, but also as a past deacon at River Road and Bellevue Churches of Christ. He served his children and other young people as the Church Camp Instructor for several years, drove the church bus regularly, and deeply respected his co-workers at his job as a cable repairman with Bell South for 37 years.

He also enjoyed horseback riding, "Old Time" music, yodeling, playing the spoons and "practical jokes." George had fond memories of his time as a catcher on the Gold Ridge Baseball team in Cullman, AL.

His sense of humor was legendary, as was his passion for holidays, especially Halloween. George was known to change out the stuffed scarecrow, on the decorated wagon, with himself. When children would come by for candy, he was ready to scare them.

George's greatest legacy is his family. In addition to his wife, Dora Mai Sawyer McGill; he is survived by four children: George Kenneth (Dee) McGill, Vicki McGill (Greg) Gann, Shirley McGill Guye and Dorene McGill Bruce; 10 grandchildren: Stephanie McGill Cannon, Ashley McGill Haywood, Elisa McGill Intraboona, Andrew Polston, Jimmy Gann, Sawyer Gann, Robby Guye, Laura Guye Wilson, Allen Maynard and Wade Bruce; 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He is also survived by a brother: Fred Ashburn McGill, Jr.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters: Martha Sullivan and Nancy Proctor Bennett; and a granddaughter: Melissa McGill.

George's family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday, May 30 at the Bellevue Church of Christ from 4:00 until 8:00 PM, and again on Wednesday, May 31 from 8:30 - 9:30 AM. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 9:30 AM, with burial and military honors to follow at Middle Tennessee State Veteran Cemetery at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made in his honor to ALIVE Hospice, 1718 Patterson St, Nashville, TN.
