Andrew Jay "Drew" Reed, age 43, peacefully passed away in his sleep at his residence in Wenatchee, WA, on Tuesday, May 19, 2015. A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 4, 2015, at 3:00 p.m., visitation is 6:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 3, and 2:00 p.m. on June 4, prior to the 3:00 p.m. service.

A 1990 graduate of McGavock High School, Drew was a proud member of the three-time state champion McGavock High School Band. While attending the University of Tennessee, he was a member of the Pride of the Southland Band and Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. In 1995, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Zoology, and then earned a Master of Science in Biology in 1998. He was awarded a Ph.D. from Rutgers University in 2008 from the Department of Ecology and Evolution, based on his research of deep-sea hydrothermal vents.

Drew will be remembered for his unique sense of humor, and his love of the outdoors. Scientific expeditions have taken Drew from the frozen waters of the Bering and Beauford Seas, to the tropical waters of Easter Island. As a researcher, he participated in expeditions to both the East Pacific Rise and Mid-Atlantic Ridge to collect samples and study deep-sea life at volcanic rifts of the ocean. He has hiked in the woods of Siberia, and studied the murky waters of Lake Superior. He has participated in discovering new species of bacteria. During his personal expeditions, Drew has traveled between the four corners of the United States plus Alaska. He especially enjoyed visiting as many National Parks, Civil War Battlefields, and road-side BBQ joints as possible, all the while making friends and sharing his unique sense of humor.

Drew, born December 7, 1971, in Nashville, TN, is preceded in death by his father, James W. Reed, Jr.; paternal grandparents James W. Reed, Sr. and Dorothy Gregory Kaszyski, maternal grandparents F. Leslie Crosswy, Jr. and LaRue Luna Crosswy; uncle, F. Leslie Crosswy III; survived by his mother, Carol Crosswy Reed of Mt. Juliet, TN, and brother, James W. "Tres" Reed III of Franklin, TN; aunts, Lynne Crosswy McIngvale (Wes) of Batesville, MS, and Kay Messmore Crosswy of Tullahoma TN; uncle, G. Scott Reed (Mary) of Clayton, MO; cousins, Gina Crosswy Henshaw (Ray) of Lynchburg, TN, Leanne Crosswy Hale (Brent) of Tullahoma, TN, Russell Crosswy (Jennessa) of Huntsville, AL, Scott Masters (Debbie) of Franklin, TN, Jonathan Masters (Catherine) of Oxford, MS, Griffin Reed and Brennan Reed of Clayton, MO.; several second cousins; and numerous dear friends around the world.
