Betty Jean Grant Smith of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away at The Lodge at Natchez Trace on Friday, May 8, 2020; she was 87 years old.
Betty, daughter of Tevis Irene Graham Grant and Auborn Grant Sr., met James in church training at Southside Baptist Church in Gadsden, Alabama. James left Gadsden for London, England with the US Air Force. James proposed marriage to Betty in a letter; he had also sent a letter to Betty's parents asking permission; they were impressed.
Betty flew to London and on March 23, 1953, married James twice in one day; once for the British Registrar, and once in the base chapel. After returning to the USA, they lovingly raised four children in a Christ centered home, and eventually became grandparents to six.
Preceded in death by her first born, Melanie Allen; brothers, Auborn Grant Jr., George Marlowe Grant, and Grogan Grant; and sisters, Christine Elrod, and Shirley Pentecost.
Betty is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, James Oscar Smith; son, Steve Smith (Rhoda); son, Greg Smith (Kathy); daughter, Jennifer Marksteiner (Joe); brother, Donald Grant (Dianna); sisters, Geraldine Grant, Brenda Grant, and Nello Ruth Bruner (Audrey); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Due to the Covid-19 virus, a drive-thru visitation will be held Friday, May 15, 2020, from 11:45 ~ 12:45, with a private graveside Funeral Service beginning at 1:00; all at Harpeth Hills Funeral Home, 9090 Hwy 100, Nashville, Tennessee, 37221.
