Charles Halter age 56 of Franklin, Tn, passed away on July 18, 2020. He was born on October 18, 1963 in Watertown NY.
He is preceded in death by his parents Samuel L. Halter and Helen Olds Halter He is survived by his sister, Susan Halter Savage of Franklin, TN and 2 brother, Jon C. Halter of Austin, TX and Sam H. Halter of Tampa, FL.
Charles was born at a time when there were few aids for children and adults with cognitive disabilities. His mother worked with him at home to learn to read and write and to expose him to novel experiences. His favorite TV show at that time was Password and he learned many words from this show. When he was 6, Sesame Street aired on TV and he enjoyed learning from this fun show.
It was difficult at that time for public schools to provide a special and appropriate curriculum for children with Down Syndrome.
When he was 18 he attended Baddour Memorial Center in Senatobia, Mississippi where he learned a trade and developed a work ethic. He later moved back to Franklin, TN and under the help of Waves, Inc he started a career as a bagger at several supermarkets in the Franklin area. He and a friend shared an apartment and eventually he moved into his own apartment close to where he worked. He worked for Kroger until his retirement.
Charles was always happy and had great sympathy for others who were having difficulties. He loved to dance, and to listen to Country music. He loved to go on trips to visit his relatives. Although these achievements sound routine, for individuals with Down Syndrome they may represent unsurmountable challenge. Charles was a trailblazer and was not afraid to tackle new challenges. Today agencies like Waves, Inc and Arc of Williamson County are local and provide extra help to these individuals to live a life based on their abilities not their disabilities.
Visitation with the family will be on Saturday August 1, 2020 from 9-10 am with a Memorial service to follow at 10 am at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens and Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow in the Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens.
