Died August 23, 2018. Born in Selmer, TN and grew up in Jackson, TN. Survived by loving wife of 62 years, Mary McCallen; children, Michael McCallen, Mary Leigh Rayhab (Scott) and Leslie Gilbert (David), granddaughters, Lauren and Hannah Rayhab; sister, Eloise Phillips. Preceded in death by parents, John and Ethel McCallen and sister, Jackie Leahy. He was a Seaman 1st Class in WWII joining at the age of 17. Upon returning attended UT Martin and then Harris Advertising Art School, while at Harris he joined the National Guard and was soon called to active duty serving as PFC (Army) in the Korean War.
His career as a commercial artist and illustrator began in St Louis, MO for 3 years and continued for 6 years in Huntsville, Al where he worked as a technical illustrator for the Apollo space program including the technical drawings for the Saturn rockets. In 1963, he moved to Nashville and worked for IDG (Illustration Design Group). In 1968 he and 2 partners started Design Graphics which was in business for 30 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed SEC football, fishing and painting wildlife.
Visitation will be Friday, August 31 4-6pm, and Saturday, September 1, 1-2pm, with service immediately following at Belle Meade United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Belle Meade United Methodist Church, American Heart Association or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
