Dante Landeo

Dante Landeo, MD, (91) died August 23, 2019. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Isabel A. Landeo, his treasured children Lillian Landeo, Isabel Maxwell (Daniel), David Landeo (Christy) and his adored grandchildren, Benjamin, Marena and Maya.

Dante is also survived by his sister, Erika Landeo Koch of Lima, Peru along with nieces, Erika and Patty Portuondo, several nephews, half siblings and his great nephew, Bryan and great niece, Hazel. His family also includes grand step-daughters Amanda Bilbrey, Megan Backus, Nicole Maxwell, Jordan Maxwell Johnson, Sandra Clemons and their families. In addition, there are many nieces and nephews from the Mauriz and Garcia families who have great love, respect and gratitude for the kindness their Tio Dante shared with them over the many years.

Dante's story is like the American success story of old. He was born January 3, 1928 on a hacienda in Tambo, Ayacucho in the Andes of Peru. He overcame tragedy and hardships as a child and youth. Fast forward... medical school...a chance conversation gives him the idea to go to the United States...a short stint in the Peruvian army...is offered a medical position in the U.S...marries the sweetheart of his dreams... has a daughter...ends up in Canada...another daughter...moves to Tennessee, has a son... becomes a skilled and caring physician to his patients... travels extensively...finally has grandchildren (the same month and year at the age of 76)...Dante goes to Glory - on the birthday of his eldest daughter - in the arms of his children in his daughter's home.

He was always proud that he put himself through medical school by working at Lima's Horse Race Track, (never betting), as the "high dollar" cashier. He graduated from the School of Medicine, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, Peru at the top of his class. He proudly became a U.S. citizen and remained in the U.S. until his death. He believed the medical profession was the greatest service to humanity. He had a great desire to serve the underprivileged and spent the majority of his career as a physician at Metro Bordeaux Hospital, in Nashville Tennessee.

Dante loved his wife and family with all his heart. He was a scholar of history with an amazing photographic memory. His intelligence was beyond compare. He loved classical music, opera, art, dancing, travel, walking, tennis and food, (especially Chinese food and apples!) He was known by his family and friends as a gentle, ethical and intelligent man. He will be greatly missed.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. And let your perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen

Visitation with the family will be held at St. Ann Catholic Church, 5100 Charlotte Avenue, Nashville TN from 1:00-1:45 PM on Saturday, September 14, 2019. A Eulogy will be presented at 1:50 PM and a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 PM.
