Diana Rebecca Roberts Thompson, 95, died peacefully at home on Thursday, December 21, 2017.
Born in Tyler, Texas, on May 29, 1922, Diana was the only child of Newton Suttle Roberts and Rebecca Starley Roberts of Corsicana, Texas, where Diana grew up before leaving for college. She attended the University of Texas, and met her late husband, DeWitt Clinton Thompson, III while he was on active duty in the US Army Air Corps in Texas during World War II. They were married on April 25, 1942, and moved after the end of World War II back to her husband's hometown of Nashville, Tennessee.
Diana and DeWitt were married for 68 years before his death in 2010.Diana is survived by her four children: Mary Rebecca Cherry, DeWitt Clinton Thompson, IV (Jackie), Diana Wilker (Marvin), and Carolyn Beckner (Jim).
In addition to her children, she is survived by 16 grandchildren: Diana Finlayson (Reid), Bill Cherry (Kelli), Elizabeth Barrett (Charles), De Thompson, V (Jamee), Mary Britton Cummings (Jody), John Thompson (Margaret), Jacqueline Towery (McClain), Scott Alden, Katharine Mosher (Bryan), Niel Alden (Libba), Laura Becca Alden, Catherine Perry (Chase), Jim Beckner, Jr. (Molly), Diana Whelan (Patrick), Helen McDaniel (Jack), and Jack Beckner. Diana is also survived by 33 great-grandchildren.
Diana touched many people with her enduring faith and her warm and welcoming personality.
She cherished her family, First Presbyterian Church, and her many friends. She was supportive of all her children's schools, and participated in the formation of the original Ensworth School. She was also involved in numerous charitable and civic organizations. She thoroughly enjoyed her service on the local board of the United Way.
Diana's family is sincerely grateful for the professional services provided by Diana's caregivers: Shanika Gibson, Sandra Andrews, Brandy Ross, and Laura Anthony.
There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, December 26, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church of Nashville at 10:00 AM CST. Because of the Christmas holidays, a family visitation and celebration of Diana's life will be held in the Spring of 2018.
