Donald Ray McCrary Sr. was born December 26, 1947 to Pastor Samuel H. McCrary and Mamie Elizabeth (Marsh) McCrary in Nashville, Tennessee. He was baptized at an early age at Fairfield Baptist Church. He later reaffirmed his faith and became a member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church. As a member of a singing family, Donald Ray started singing and performing at an early age.
Donald Ray graduated from Cameron High School in 1965 and later attended Tennessee State University where he majored in Voice until he was drafted to the Vietnam War in his senior year. Donald Ray served as a Military Policeman in the United States Army until 1972.
After serving his country Donald Ray returned to Nashville and worked at Vanderbilt University. He later began his employment of 30 years at Ford Glass plant from which he retired in 2002. During this time, his real labor of love started when he founded "The Unexpected" which later became "City Streets". As the lead singer of City Streets he toured the country performing, and released "Livin' in the Jungle" on RCA record label in 1979.
Donald Ray was called home on November 27th, 2013 and leaves to cherish his memory his wife Kay (Chaplin) McCrary and children, daughter and son-in-law Dawn Michele Woolcock, and Adrian "Tony" of Powder Springs, GA; daughter and son-in-law Megan Elizabeth Claggett and Travis of Maryland; daughter and son-in-law Emmalee Britt Greene and Paul of Nashville TN and son Donald Ray McCrary Jr. of Nashville, TN; and grandchildren Chanel, Michael, Kaylin, Kristian and Kaleb. He will be greatly missed by his siblings - brother Samuel McCrary Jr. and wife Sylvia; sister Beverly McCrary; brother Alan McCrary; sister Deborah McCrary; brother Ricky McCrary; sister Regina McCrary; sister Alfreda(McCrary) Lee and husband Narcisco; aunt Mildred Jackson and husband Jack of Louisville, KY and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
