Age 88, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Brighton Gardens Memory Care unit in Brentwood, TN following an extended illness.
Donald was born August 15, 1928 in Spruce Run, VA to the late Leonard Christian and Cynthia Elizabeth Vaught. He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Garlin Jacob Vaught, Leonard Daniel Vaught, Paul Edward Vaught, Nelson Junior Vaught and Walter Allen Vaught.
Donald spent his working career as a fireman in the Washington, D.C. Fire Department beginning as a private and rising through dedication and perseverance to the level of captain. He met and married his wife, Suzanne Miller, in May, 1953 and lived in Washington, D.C. raising three daughters. Donald was drafted and served two years in the United States Army in Alaska near the end of the Korean War. During Donald's off hours from the fire department he worked in home building construction achieving the ultimate feat of building his family their first home from the ground up. This was a feat he repeated on two more occasions finally building a home for retirement on a farm in north Alabama, where he enjoyed gardening and raising cattle. Donald was a self taught automotive mechanic who enjoyed reconstructing and restoring a vintage MG from a crate of rusty parts in retirement. In October, 1998 Donald and his wife moved to Nashville, TN to be nearer to family. He was an active member of the Forest Hills Baptist Church.
Donald is survived by his wife of 63 years, Suzanne Miller Vaught; three daughters, Sharon (Stuart) Spigel of Arrowsic, ME, Dr. Katherine (Tracy) Considine of St. Augustine, FL, and Lori Bowman of Brentwood, TN; three sisters, Georgia Catherine Shelton of Salem, VA, Sylvia Jane Pace of Newport News, VA and Jewell Josephine Epling of Salem, VA; two brothers, Bobby Leon Vaught of Floyd, VA and Howard Bracket Vaught of The Villages, FL; seven grandchildren, Rebecca Tripodi, Patrick Considine, Caitlyn Considine, Andrew Considine, Matthew Considine, Adam Bowman, and Anna Bowman.
Arrangements for Donald are entrusted to Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens, Funeral and Cremation Home at 9090 Highway 100. Donald's family will receive friends for visitation from 1:00-3:00 pm on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Harpeth Hills Funeral Home. Visitation will be followed by a Celebration of Life at 3:00pm officiated by Dr. Sam Boyd, Senior Pastor, Forest Hills Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to Forest Hills Baptist Church, 2101 Old Hickory Blvd., Nashville, TN 37215.
