Dorothy Cash Orten

March 14, 1929 — July 22, 2024

Dorothy Cash Orten, of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away on July 22nd, 2024 at the age of 95. She was born on March 14th, 1929 in Sturgis, Kentucky. She grew up in Caldwell County, Kentucky in the communities of Crowtown, White Sulphur, Farmersville, and Fredonia.

Dorothy Sue Cash graduated from Fredonia High School in 1947. At the age of 23, she began her higher education at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee and graduated in 1955. She was elected as co-Miss Union in 1955. Dot was so happy when her granddaughter Emily followed in her footsteps and graduated from her dear Union University in 2007 and 2010.

Dot married Carl J. Orten in 1955 making their home in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. She went to work in the Civilian Personnel Office as a clerk typist on-base at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. In 1970, Dot’s job at Fort Campbell was abolished and she and her two sons moved to Bellevue, Tennessee, a community in southwest Nashville. She accepted a job in the Personnel Office with the US Army Corps of Engineers in the Nashville District Office. During her professional career, Dot worked as a Personnel Specialist for the Department of the Army in Kaiserslautern, West Germany from 1985 - 1988. Dot retired in 1994 from her position as Chief of Recruitment and Replacement with the Corps after 38 years of Federal Service.

Dot had a second job and passion as an antique dealer. Over 35 years in the business, she filled antique booths in Franklin, Goodlettsville, and Mt. Juliet to market and resell her finds. She always loved “the hunt” for new merchandise more than the resell side of the business.

Dot was actively involved in Bellevue Baptist Chapel and then at Bellevue Baptist Church after becoming a Charter Member of the Church in 1972. Over her many years of faithful service to the Lord at Bellevue Baptist Church, she served as a Sunday School teacher of children, member and leader of various committees, and member of long-range planning teams. Her favorite role was as the leader of the visitation team. She visited church members that were experiencing health issues or were confined to their home or healthcare facility. She spent time with these church members and delivered Sunday school materials and audio copies of Sunday services.

Dot is preceded in death by her parents, Percy Graves and Nannie Bealmear Cash; siblings, Lester “Red” Cash, Glenn Cash, and twin sister Betty Lou Agnew; and husband Carl J. Orten.

She is survived by her sons Jeff (Patti) Orten and Peyton C. Orten; sisters Juanita Hunsaker and Dixie Barnes; sister-in-law Hilda Cash; grandchildren James Orten, Jenny (Jason) Corbin, Emily (Matt) House; great-grandchildren Wyatt Orten, Peyton Lynette (Garik) Stein, Ashlyn Corbin, and Hudson House; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

The family would like to thank all the staff at NHC Place at the Trace and Caris Healthcare Hospice Services for the care and compassion they showed our Mother over the last 10 months and in her final days and hours.
