Born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 20, 1932

Departed on September 6, 2020 and resided in Nashville, Tennessee

Douglas Lawrence MacKenzie, 88, of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2020. Douglas was born April 20, 1932, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of the late Adam McCrone MacKenzie and Evelyn Wilson MacKenzie of North Madison, Ohio. After graduating from Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana, Doug matriculated at Purdue University, where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity and earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1955. While at Purdue, Doug met and married his beloved wife of 38 years, the late Patricia Anne Price MacKenzie. He obtained his Indiana Professional Engineering (PE) License in 1960. After beginning his career at the Emerson Electric Company, St. Louis, Missouri, followed by National Homes Corporation in Lafayette, Indiana, Doug switched careers and moved his young family to Nashville to open a Burger Chef in West Nashville in 1964. Doug developed and owned six Burger Chefs throughout Tennessee. In 1984, Doug joined the Metropolitan Nashville Codes Department as a Plans Examiner and was promoted to Chief Plans Examiner in 1988, where he served until his retirement in 2000. As a dedicated government servant, Doug was instrumental in the codification of the Metro Nashville Electric Code and earned the MTCOA Lifetime Achievement Award. Doug was most proud of his participation on the Project Teams for the Schermerhorn Symphony Center and Nissan Stadium. Titans fans can thank Doug for the comfortable stadium seats as he insisted that the developer add three additional inches of legroom to each seat, causing a reconfiguration of the stadium. Doug delighted in his family, football, and collecting original paintings by Ralph J. MacDonald. He is predeceased by his sister, Joyce Evelyn MacKenzie, and brother, Donald Wilson MacKenzie. Doug is survived by his children, D. Scott MacKenzie (Pat) of Collegeville, PA; Mark A. MacKenzie (Amy) of Franklin, TN; Lee Anne MacKenzie Chaskes (Rob) of Deerfield Beach, FL; and Ava MacKenzie Arbogast of Fairview, TN. Doug's grandchildren are Victoria MacKenzie, William Chaskes, Robert Chaskes, Ian MacKenzie, Adam Chaskes, Gavin Arbogast, and Fiona Arbogast.
Doug's life will be celebrated at a private graveside service.
