Dr. John Benjamin Bond died peacefully on March 30, 2017 at age 85. Dr. Bond was born in Clarksville, TN on May 26, 1931. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Erna Bond and his brother, Arthur Gernt Bond. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Annelle Lyle Bond, their four children, John Benjamin Bond, III, Stephen Bond (Darlene), Betty Bond Westerman (Steve), Anne Bond Gordon (Stuart), and two grandchildren, Andrew Gordon and William Gordon. He is also survived by his sister Patricia Decker-Nunnelley and many cousins, nieces and nephews

Dr. Bond graduated from Austin Peay State College. He graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1955. He trained in ophthalmology at Bowman Gray School of Medicine and completed his training at Vanderbilt in 1962. He practiced ophthalmology in Nashville for over 50 years. He was adored by the patients of his practice which he continued even in declining health until to his retirement in 2014. He lived an enriched life largely dedicated to his family, and patients. He considered learning and teaching an essential part his career as a physician and taught ophthalmology residents as a community faculty member at Vanderbilt for many years, ultimately obtaining the title of Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology.

He had a passion for music and played clarinet and saxophone in several small bands in Nashville. He had a keen interest in science, history and the outdoors which he enjoyed through gardening, hiking, bird watching and simply being in God's splendor. He loved to talk and to tell stories; he always spoke his mind with kindness and respect for everyone.

Dr. Bond was a member First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and Elder.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, April 2, 2017 and 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. on Monday at The Cheek House at First Presbyterian Church. A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday at First Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens.
