Dr. Walter Gobbel passed away at his home on June 9, 2017, at the age of 97. He was born to Walter G. Gobbel Sr. and Elizabeth M. Gobbel in Suffolk Virginia. He graduated from Duke University Medical School in 1944. After 29 months in the navy as a medical officer, he married his wife of 71 years, Elizabeth Prather Gobbel. He finished training in New York and came to Nashville, Tenn., serving as Chief of Staff at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Professor of Surgery and Associate Dean of the Vanderbilt medical school until retirement in 1986.

Dr. Gobbel was a daylily enthusiast, serving as a judge in nation-wide shows. He also enjoyed tennis, water skiing, houseboating, breadmaking, winemaking, and landscape designs. He will be dearly missed by his wife, daughters, Margaret Schmechel and Susan Siami, and their husbands, Doug and Tommy, whom he adored. He also left six grandchildren, whose lives were greatly impacted by his incredible generosity. His legacy includes these precious men and women, Daniel Moore, Michelle Soll, Lizzy Moore, Matthew Siami, John Siami and Joseph Siami, and six great grandchildren.

Visitation is at West End United Methodist Church at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, followed by service at 11:00 and burial at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens.
