Dr. Marvin Joseph Guth, Jr.- Age 64 of Nashville, TN passed away May 29, 2015 at his home after a long illness surrounded by his loving family members.
Marvin was born on his Mother's birthday, May 4, 1951, to the late Marvin Joseph, Sr. and Alyce Vere Guth, in Lake Charles, LA, where he resided until going away to dental school. Marvin was the middle of five children. He attended University Methodist Church where he received Christ around the age of 12. Marvin daily expressed his gratitude to God for the many blessings He bestowed upon him, while sustaining him through grace during the tribulations of his life.
A 1969 graduate of LaGrange Senior High School in Lake Charles, Marvin went on to attend McNeese State University in Lake Charles followed by Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in New Orleans, LA., getting his D.D.S. degree in May 1976, one month after Katherine, his first child, was born.
Marvin was a practicing dentist in GA and TN for a total of 33 years, 22 of which were in his private practice in Griffin, GA.
Marvin had a love for sports, scouts, flying, and music. He was an avid LSU and Dallas Cowboy fan. He coached soccer, basketball, and baseball for his three children, Katherine, Marvin Otis, and Joseph. He received the Boy Scout Eagle Scout Award on December 5, 1965. He served as a Scout Leader for his two sons.
Because of his love of flying he trained for and received his private pilot's license in 1969. He logged over 600 flying hours. He also spent some time enjoying his hobby of flying model radio controlled airplanes.
As a trombone player he was a member of the LaGrange Senior High School Band. He played with a dance band orchestra, Tascar's Tom Cats, in Griffin, GA, in the late 70's and 80's. They played at various local functions. In 1980 he traveled to South Korea with a group of musicians as a part of a Cultural Exchange with the citizens of South Korea.
Marvin's passion was reading his Bible and seeking the face of his God, the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. He received his greatest comfort from Psalm 118 and Matthew 6:31-34. His other passion was spending time with family and friends. He had a blended family with five children, 12 grandchildren all living in five different states, and he looked forward to the times they could be together as a family.
Those who preceded him in death were his parents, Marvin Joseph, Sr. and Alyce Vere Guth; his sister, Mary Jo Murphy; and a nephew, Dr. Walter Lee Guth.
He leaves to honor his memory his loving wife of 26 ½ years, Joan Thomas Fontaine Guth; step-son, Eric Adair Fontaine (Lisa) of Houston, TX; step-daughter, Tiffany Gail Fontaine Beamer (Greg) of Nashville, TN; daughter, Mary Katherine Guth Matey (Jonathan) of Locust Grove, GA; Sons, Marvin Otis Guth of Cocoa Beach, FL; and Joseph Louis Guth of Redonda Beach, CA; 12 grandchildren, Rebecca Jean Beamer, Emily Rose Beamer, Annabelle Hope Beamer, Miranda Joan Beamer, Juliana Elizabeth Matey, Isabella Katherine Matey, Sophia Grace Matey, Gabriella Elyse Matey, Jacob Ethan Lee Frakes, Kiyannah Lallie Drab, Serenity Grace Guth, Presley Claire Guth; brothers, Harold Lee Guth (Grace) and Dr. Charles Edward Guth (Claire), sister, Alice Arlene Guth Wyrick (Ken); brother-in-law, George Murphy; one niece and six nephews.
