Edmond ("Ed") Jennings Douglas, 57 years of age, passed away peacefully at his Nashville home on September 25, 2016.

Ed is survived by his wife of 25 years, Evelyn Remke Douglas; daughter, Alexandria ("Alex"); and son, Nicholas ("Nick"). He is also survived by his mother, Gayle Jennings Douglas; sister, Mary Steal Douglas; sister-in-law, Ellen Remke Fellman; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Teri Remke; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Doug and Sara Remke; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Anna Bell and Clarence Remke; along with a number of nephews, aunts, and uncles. Ed was preceded in death by his father, Travis Douglas, and brother, Morris Douglas.

Ed was born in Brazil on October 8, 1958 and, during his childhood, he and his family lived in a variety of countries, including Switzerland, Mexico, and Brazil-perhaps that is why Ed lived as if he were always on an adventure. Ed enjoyed being outdoors, swimming, playing tennis, and, most of all, sailing. While participating in his various hobbies, he had the pleasure of making several lifetime friends: John McClendon, Hugh Jones, Pat Hawkins, and Roger Adams.

Ed enjoyed working as a respiratory therapist at St. Thomas Hospital Midtown and loved making his coworkers smile. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a mental collection of corny jokes he shared whenever possible. Ed loved talking with others and, as the old adage goes, he never knew a stranger.

Sadly, ALS-the disease that led to Ed's death-took his ability to speak early in the disease process. That was one of the worst parts of ALS for him. ALS is a hateful disease. It robs a piece of you at a time. Through it all, Ed tried to remain upbeat and found happiness each day. The silver lining of his long goodbye was that he had the chance to visit with the many friends and family members who stopped by his home. Evelyn, Alex, and Nick are grateful to know that the man they love deeply and miss dearly was also loved by many others. And they are sure that, having left his weakened body, Ed is now sailing somewhere, with a huge smile on his face.

Evelyn would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Dr. John Guenst and all her dear long time nursing friends, sister Ellen, loving neighbors and her current coworkers who were so much help in Ed's final days. Also thank you so much to the Alive Hospice staff, especially Sara and Peggy for their excellent care.

Visitation will be Friday, September 30, from 4 - 8 p.m. and Saturday, October 1, at 10 a.m. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens Funeral Home.
