Edward Lynn Casey

April 3, 1934 — November 20, 2022

Nashville

Edward Lynn Casey, age 88, of Nashville, Tennessee passed away at home on November 20, 2022.

Preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary Casey; brothers, Fentress Casey and Tommy Casey. Ed was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Survived by his loving wife of 51 years Ann Casey; sons, Steve (Tammy) Casey, Dave (Andee) Casey; grandchildren, Sierra Casey, Ainsley Casey, Meaghan Casey, Micah Casey, Hannah-Grace Casey, Josiah Casey, Elijah Casey, numerous family, loved ones, and friends.

At 14 years old, Ed began his journey in weightlifting, which would remain a life-long hobby. In his youth he was an incredibly well-decorated athlete and would continue collecting medals and trophies for both weightlifting, and eventually, running, into his early eighties.

Ed joined the United States Army at age twenty in 1955 and served for three years. During this time, the evangelism of a Christian bunkmate influenced him, and he gave his life to Christ. He held fast to his Christian faith and deeply loved the Lord throughout the rest of his life.

Ed was accomplished in his career and worked for the State of Tennessee for 35 plus years. While there, he served, for a period, as the chairman of the Accident Prevention Committee under the TN State Health and Planning Council. He is credited as the first person to suggest the Tennessee Child Restraint Law in 1975. His suggestion was influenced by his Christian faith: “it is the right thing to do, to care for young children that cannot care for themselves.” Despite initial failures, this law was passed in 1978 due to his and the committee’s work. It was the first of its kind in the Nation.

In his free time, he enjoyed hiking, backpacking, weightlifting, and running. He was one of the founding leaders of the Tennessee Trails Association. Both his sons inherited his love of the outdoors.

In retirement, Ed spent his time with his wife Ann, babysitting their grandchildren, working out at the Bellevue YMCA, running various races, sharing a daily mocha, and going on scenic drives down McCrory Lane. He loved to tell stories of his time in the army, his coming to faith, his first date with Ann at the Shoney’s on Murphy Road (they met through a computer dating service, one of the first of its kind!), and his childhood memories of hiding in the trees in his front yard with his brothers and dropping bags of water on the unfortunate soul that passed by. He made sure to never once let his grandchildren beat him in a game of checkers!

Out of all his accomplishments his greatest love was Christ and his family, and he will be dearly missed.

A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for December 17, 2022, at 10:00 AM, Christ Community Church, 1215 Hillsboro Road, Franklin, TN 37069.
