Elisabeth "Betty" Brodie passed away peacefully Friday, March 20, 2015 after a two year bout with cancer. She was able to lead a mostly normal life for the two years after the initial diagnosis until recently when the disease overtook her. Betty was born in Mechelen, Belgium to Jan Idris Heyvaerts and Yvonne Maes. It soon became obvious that she had a talent for foreign languages as she graduated from Onze Lieve Vrouw Van De Ham Institute with an emphasis in language. Her first job was for the Archbishop of the diocese of Malines-Brussels. While working for the Monsanto Chemical Co. in Brussels, she was transferred to St. Louis where she met her husband, Robert "Bob" Brodie. They have lived in St. Louis, Tokyo, Houston and Hong Kong and have been in Nashville for the last 30 years.
Betty was active in the Nashville community and was one of the initial organizers of Alliance Francaise de Nashville, Sister Cities of Nashville, Tennessee Foreign Language Institute and for the last 13 years she has been an enthusiastic volunteer at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.
Betty is survived by her husband of 46 years, Bob, their two daughters (who were both born in Japan) Catherine "Cathy" Halukla of Atlanta and Margot Gardiner of Philadelphia and five grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, Betty requests that contributions be made to Alive Hospice or the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.
A Memorial Service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2015 with visitation one hour prior to the service at Harpeth Hills Funeral Home, 9090 Hwy 100, Nashville, (615) 646-9292 www.harpethhills.com
