Ethel Rosella Lunn was born on March 10th, 1927 in Herrin, IL.
She moved to Nashville, TN in 1962 with 4 small children in tow (Johnny, Lynne, Larry, and Gary). She had a vast and successful career that consisted of working as a music teacher and selling pianos at Voltz Music Co, Secretary to the VP at Capital City Bank, Officer Manager at Lunn & Associates, and Executive Secretary for Lunn Inc. She married D. Tom Lunn on April 23rd, 1964, and her family of 5 immediately grew into a family of 10.
Anyone who knows Ethel knew that her greatest passion was ministering to the Lord and others through her God ordained musical talent. The piano and organ were seamless extensions of her body. Her fingers would float effortlessly over the keys in a form of worship that was unworldly. When Ethel struck a chord on Earth, she undeniably struck a chord in Heaven.
Ethel lived the Christian life that was born from a pure heart. At the young age of eleven she dedicated her life to playing the piano for Kingdom-only purposes with absolutely no room for compromise...not even for a moment. Her undying dedication to every event that she played for was carried out with a huge heart of total servanthood. From every conference, tent revival meeting, church service, quartet convention, and piano lesson, to every single time her children sang and played with her at churches, prisons, or meeting halls, Ethel played with wondrous, thunderous authority. When she stretched her hands across the keys and played the first note, everyone knew that all souls within the sound of her piano were "going to get blessed!"
Her ministry spanned over 78 years serving as pianist and/or organist for Peoples Baptist Church and Lewis Lane Baptist Church, both in Owensboro, Kentucky. She then served at Park Avenue Baptist Church, Calvary Baptist Church, and Westwood Baptist Church in Nashville. Through the years Ethel played with multiple quartets and trios. Most recently, she played as the pianist for a gospel quartet, the Golden Heirs, for over ten years. She also played for the Nashville Baptist Association for their weekly Pastor's conference, The Nashville Rescue Mission, and several nursing homes in and around Nashville She even played live as part of a studio recording for country artist, Brad Paisley.
Because of her declining health, Ethel was admitted to the hospital on Friday morning January 12th. On the following Sunday morning, she had an episode that prompted the doctor to instruct all family members to come say their final good-byes. Surprisingly, by Sunday afternoon, she had gathered the strength to be wheeled down to the lobby of the hospital, where there was a grand piano, and she proceeded to play her last concert for her family, friends and hospital staff. It was a divine, miraculous moment that will always be treasured in the hearts her whole family.
Although music was her passion, Ethel had many other hobbies and interests. She enjoyed fishing and bowling and she did both quite well. She owned and occasionally showed Tennessee Walking Horses. She LOVED her pets and she loved feeding the birds, stocking her bird feeders on her patio everyday and would watch the redbirds, bluebirds, finch, dove and, of course the squirrels and chipmunks while they ate along side of each other. She did her best to make sure they did not go hungry.
Ethel said the first thing she wanted to do when she gets to heaven is play a golden Béesendorfer piano for Jesus.
Ethel peacefully stepped into heaven on January 18th @ 9:24 pm with her Daughter and Son holding her hands. She leaves a legacy of 7 children, 22 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren who will greatly miss her beautiful talent, love, wit, care, and southern charm.
