Geneva L. McElroy, age 97 of Ashland City, went to be with her heavenly father Friday, May 29, 2020. She was born January 31, 1923 in Franklin TN to the late Columbus and Ollie (Hassell) Johnson. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Henry Clayton McElroy.
Geneva was the youngest of nine children and was a preacher's wife for fifty-nine years. She wrote a series of articles in the Gospel Advocate, pinned as the Traveling Preacher's Wife. Geneva loved to teach Sunday school and is remembered by her family as being a most faithful follower of Christ. In her later years she was a member of Pegram Church of Christ and enjoyed a lifetime of singing hymns. She loved to cook, her favorite was making tomato gravy and minute steak. She also loved sewing. At one point in her life she even made funeral shrouds.
After the death of her husband she attended Catholic Charities Adult Daycare and Fifty Forward Adult Daycare. She was honored to have her picture cover an entire side of their van which you can see in different parts of Davidson County. She was also interviewed and featured on a local radio station. Geneva is the last original member of two great families the Johnsons and the McElroys.
She is survived by her daughter, Pam Lynn (Jeff); son, Roger McElroy; granddaughter, Hayley McElroy; granddaughter, Heather Smith; granddaughter, Jenny Sykes (Blake); great-grandson, Logan Smith; great-granddaughter, Lila Brooke Smith; great-granddaughter, Annabelle Sykes; great-grandson, Knox Sykes; very special friends, Jana and Jera Ringemann; a host of nieces and nephews; and Lori McElroy.
We would like to express our sincere thanks for the love and care given to Geneva by the staff at The Waters of Cheatham while she resided there.
Family will receive friends from 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. Wednesday June 3, 2020 at Harpeth Hills Funeral Home. A celebration of life graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. in the Garden of Cross of Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens.
