Geraldine Maxine Mestad Fuhrman
Born July 26, 1916, in Rochester, MN to Obert Mested and Mabel Ranvick Mestad, Gerry died July 4, 2015. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Franklin Paul Fuhrman, Jr. who died on December 29, 1997, and her brother, John Mestad, who died November 13, 2007.
She is survived by her niece, Ann Mestad Moloian (Ed), nephew John Douglas Mestad (Laura) and great niece Jennifer Herz as well as her deceased husband's niece, Patti Childers Gilbert (Richard) and nephew Lynn Childers (Mary).
Gerry was very proud of the fact she was 100% Norwegian. On June 15, 1930, she was confirmed in Zumbro Evangelical Church in Rochester. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1933 and attended a local Junior College. Gerry's parents divorced, and in 1943, she, her brother, and mother moved to California.
In September of 1944, she met a handsome young service man, Lt. Franklin Fuhrman. After 6 days of being together, Franklin asked her to marry him and bought her an engagement ring that Christmas. The two were married on April 21, 1945, in the chapel of the University of Michigan where Franklin was studying Japanese in preparation for deployment to Japan. He was in Japan 4 days and in Korea 10 months. During this time, the newly wed bride lived with Franklin's parents, then his sister and her family. Finally, Franklin returned to civilian life, and in October 1946, Franklin and Gerry moved to Nashville where Franklin worked as an Internal Revenue Agent, and she became a homemaker.
Gerry loved Immanuel Baptist Church and was very proud of her status as the oldest member there. She loved vanilla ice-cream and chocolate, arts and crafts, hymns and classical music, and knitting. Until recently, she had a memory "like an elephant." She had a "focused" political agenda and did not hesitate to express her opinion, especially during the last few years.
Gerry's departure will leave a void in many lives, but she missed Franklin every day since his death and longed to join him. Let us rejoice that her wish has been granted.
