Glenna Baker Gershowitz

Glenna Baker Gershowitz, born December 16, 1927, passed away June 13, 2022. She was the daughter of Edwin Baker and Betty McQuinley Baker, and much-loved stepmother Stella Kyros Baker.
Glenna was preceded in death by her parents, brother James Baker, sister Edna Baker Sutcliffe, her loving husband Herman Gershowitz, and her beloved son Daniel Lewis Gershowitz.
She is survived by her sons James Franklin Gershowitz and spouse Stacy Meadows, Cary Innes Grayson, Stacy Dean Gershowitz and spouse Barbara Moyers Gershowitz; grandchildren Maria Luisa King and Elena Rosa (Alex) King; and siblings Janet Baker King, Edwin Baker, Michael Baker, and Gregory Baker.
Born in Milford, Ohio, Glenna moved with her family to Michigan where they eventually settled on a farm in North Branch. At 14 years of age, she altered her birth certificate so that she might work and moved first to Detroit and very soon thereafter (on the heels of her sister Edna) to New York. In Manhattan she worked for several years in the administration offices of the Theatre Guild, before meeting and eventually marrying Herman Gershowitz on July 25, 1953. Herman’s career took them to St. Paul, MN, Savannah, GA, and finally Nashville, TN. James arrived in 1955, Dan in 1957, Cary in 1958, and Stacy in 1960. She was a fiercely and famously devoted mother, and happily made her four sons the joy and purpose of her life. She also worked for the Metro Nashville Public School system and was in both the offices and classrooms at Head School with her dear friend Principal Thelma Rucker. After Ms. Rucker’s retirement, Glenna worked for many years in the Adult and Community Education Division of the Metro School Board. Following her retirement, Glenna worked a full-time schedule volunteering at both St. Thomas and Baptist Hospitals (prior to their merger).
As anyone who knew her could tell you, Glenna was a beautiful, stylish, intelligent, and very funny lady–always ready for a party, a road trip, a celebration, or a heartfelt conversation. But most wonderful of all, she was our mom, and we will miss her each and every day. Till we meet again, Mom.
