Goodloe Summers Chaffin, Sr, age 94 of Nashville, passed away February 20, 2017 at the Blakemore of Green Hills.
The Nashville native was born November 13, 1922 to Perry Morgan Chaffin and Ruby Warden Chaffin.
While at Vanderbilt, Goodloe entered the service of his country in the United States Navy. He served near the end of World War II, first as a naval aviator, then as a navigator. He crossed the Atlantic several times returning troops from the European Theatre on the USS Lake Champlain. Afterwards, he completed his degree at Vanderbilt.
He served as President of The Nashville Civitan Club and the Tennessee Real Estate Appraisal Chapter AIREA. He was 2nd VP of the Life & Casualty Insurance Company, VP of Intereal Company, and a land investor and developer.
Goodloe's life can be summed up in three words: God, Family and Country. He was a faithful member of the West End Church of Christ where he and his wife, Lucille, raised their six children. In addition to serving the church as a deacon, he served in several areas while his children were growing up. He was active in their activities, supporting them and their friends. His dedication to his Savior was the foundation of his life. Service to others came naturally.
The next most important aspect was family. Even in the final days of his life, Goodloe talked about how blessed he was to have such a wonderful family. Everyone knew they were blessed because of him. He proudly served as the patriarch of the Chaffin family, understanding the meaning of leading by example. He loved his wife and children and adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He loved to travel, especially spending time on Hilton Head Island. He enjoyed playing golf and had a hole-in-one at the age of 80.
Goodloe felt traditions were important, celebrating holidays and birthdays with his family.
He married Lucille Davis on April 9, 1949. Together, they journeyed until her death in 2012. Their lives were blessed with six children: Summers (Nancy) Chaffin, Robert (Margot) Chaffin, Susan Chaffin, Patty (Bill) Hofstetter, Mary Beth (Randy) Johnson and Bill (Leslie) Chaffin. Their legacy will continue through their 14 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and two expected great-grandchildren, in the near future.
His family will receive friends on Thursday, February 23 from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at Harpeth Hills Funeral Home. They will join to celebrate his life on Friday, February 24 at 1:00 PM at the funeral home, with services officiated by Dr. Kenneth Dye. Burial will be in the family mausoleum in Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens, beside his dear wife, Lucille.
