H. Clay Newsome III, MD died peacefully and surrounded by family on May 12, 2017. He was born July 8, 1947 in Pilot Mountain, NC, the son of a small-town physician. He left his hometown to go to boarding school, at Indian Springs in Birmingham, AL, where he cultivated many memories and lifetime friends (Springers). He returned to North Carolina and ultimately graduated from medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (GO TARHEELS!). He settled his family in Nashville after finishing his residency at Vanderbilt University and grew his practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Thomas Midtown (Baptist) Hospital.
He was many things to many people but above all he was a good man. To his patients he was "just one of the girls". As an obstetrician he was the first face his patient's babies would ever see. He was a doctor his colleagues could depend upon in any situation. He was a healer of hurts big and small. He was a teller of stories and histories, both real and fantastic. He was a father and a mentor, to his own children, extended family and to anyone he met who needed it. He felt education was important and encouraged family members to achieve their goals. Above all he's been a loyal friend to all of them and has touched more lives than we will ever know.
He was preceded in death by his father, Henry C. Newsome, Jr.; mother, Frances W. Newsome; sister, Patricia L. Keicher.
He is survived by his "partner in crime" of 40 years, Lou Anne Lee Newsome; children, M. Jennifer Tatum (Kevin), H. Clay Newsome IV (Shayne); Patricia Lauren Mundy (Mike); grandchildren, Hannah (20), Brooke (20), Brantley (13) and Riley (10). We will all miss our Pop.
