James (Jim) Moore Carney, 83, of Nashville, TN passed away peacefully on September 15, 2015 at Lakeshore the Meadows nursing home.
Jim was born April 5, 1932 in Tullahoma, TN to parents Sam Weakley Carney and Virginia Lee Moore. He graduated from the Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, TN in 1950. He attended Tulane University for two years, and then finished his bachelors of science in business and marketing from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1954. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
Charming and engaging, Jim was a great story-teller who could almost always get a smile and a laugh. He served as a Lieutenant in the Army from 1954-1956. Jim was a regional sales manager for Ross Laboratories, a division of Abbott, for 42 years. Always successful and competitive, he enjoyed the challenges of his work and retired in 2003, just a few years before his passing. He was dedicated to providing well for his family, and he also took a strong interest in helping his employees develop and succeed. Jim loved American antique furniture and enjoyed collecting it. Perhaps because of the many years he traveled for work, one of his biggest pleasures was a delicious home-cooked meal. He was an enthusiast for finding out-of-the way "meat and three" restaurants all around his territory in Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky. He himself was a great cook and enjoyed entertaining friends on the weekends.
Jim is survived by his four children, Jenny Summers of Atlanta, Jim Carney, Jr. of Denver, Hannah Bond of Nashville, and Cindy Lee of Maui; his three granddaughters Sydney Summers, Rachel Summers, and Gracie Carney; his loving companion Carol Jones; and his nephews Sam Carney III and Clay Stuart Carney.
The family will receive friends on Friday, September 25, 2015, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Harpeth Hills Funeral Home. A funeral and celebration of life service will be held at 11:30 am on Saturday, September 26, 2015, at the Harpeth Hills Funeral Home at 9090 Highway 100, Nashville, TN 37221. Burial will occur the following day at 11:00 am at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, 4758 New Manchester Highway, Tullahoma, TN 37388.
Memorial donations may be made in Jim's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 1102 17th Ave S #300, Nashville, TN 37212 (615) 320-3733 (Nashville Office)
