Master Sgt. James M. Cook, Retried, age 82 of Greenbrier, passed away October 16, 2017 at Skyline Medical Center.
A native of Dallas, TX, he was the son of the late Mortimer M. Cook and Velma Waldrop Cook.
James dedicated his life to the service and protection of his country in the United States Army. During his 22 year career, he helped develop the 1st Calvary Airmobile Concept. He proudly served in the 1st Calvary Airmobile and 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam. He fought in the Battle of Ia Drang Valley, commonly known as the Battle of LZ XRAY. He was awarded three Bronze Stars, including one with Valor.
Following his retirement he could be found in his woodwork shop where he created loads of sawdust as well as beautiful keepsakes for his family. His joy was as a grandfather, rocking his grandchildren in his arms.
His greatest legacy is his family. He is survived by his wife of 59 years: Farris Nash Cook; seven children: James M. (Lisa) Cook, Jr, William Sterling Cook, Kevin (Kelly) Cook, Nikki (Frankie) Tolliver, Karen (Chris) Twele, 1SG Russell (Hope) Cook and Mylisa (David) Panek; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Harpeth Hills Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life service will be conducted Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens.
