Joanna Lee Rice, aged 81, passed away on November 11, 2024, surrounded by her family. Born on July 15, 1943, in Franklin, TN, she was the beloved daughter of the late W. Orbin Pegram and Vella L. Sullivan. Joanna spent her early years in Waverly, TN, where she graduated from Waverly Central High School in 1961. She went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University and a Master's degree from Illinois State University.
Joanna dedicated approximately thirty years of her life to education, serving as a teacher and school counselor in Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee. She was a devoted mother to her daughter, Elizabeth Mangrum (Dr. Timothy Mangrum), and a loving grandmother to her three granddaughters: Abigail, Kathryn, and Anna Carlton. In addition to her parents, Joanna was preceded in death by her brother, Dr. Wayne F. Pegram. She is survived by several nephews and cousins.
Joanna was known for her lovely smile and beautiful voice. She took great joy in participating in congregational singing at the Church of Christ, where she worshipped faithfully. JoJo, as she was fondly known by her granddaughters and friends, was a warm, loving presence in all their lives.
Visitation will be held on November 23, 2024, at Bellevue Church of Christ, 7401 Hwy 70 S, Nashville, TN 37221, from 10 AM until 11:30 AM, followed by funeral services at the church. Interment will follow at the Jane Jones Cemetery in Fairview,TN, with a graveside service for family and special friends.
