Larry Allan Lukens, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and an esteemed figure in the energy sector, passed away on February 22, 2025, in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of85. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on April 16, 1939, Larry’s life was defined by his passionate commitment to family, and the pursuit of a sustainable future. A life long student, his educational journey began at Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis,IN and continued at Purdue University, where he earned, with highest honors, his Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Mechanical Engineering.
A 20-year veteran of the Navy, Larry retired as a Lieutenant Commander, infusing his work ethic and dedication into both his military and civilian careers. His efforts earned him a place of respect and admiration in the hearts of many, reflecting the core values he lived by - hard work and perseverance.
Larry dedicated his life's work to the energy business, where he made significant contributions over his remarkable career. He was not only a pioneer in the field but also a tireless advocate for alternative energy sources, devoting the last 50 years of his life to this critical endeavor. He was a fixture on the Western Slope of Colorado’s oil shale fields, a large portion of which, due to the incredible generosity of his work colleagues, now honors his memory by bearing his name. His notable achievements include receiving the Meritorious Service Award, serving on the National Energy Committee and co-founding the Synthetic Fuels Corporation. Larry’s tireless dedication, through work on the Committee and testimony to Congress, led to much of our country’s current energy policies. Due to an unwavering devotion to ever improving our world and lives, he never truly embraced retirement; rather, approaching each day as an opportunity to contribute,inspiring those around him with his steadfast dedication.
Family was at the center of Larry's world. He shared a loving and enduring marriage of 64years with his beloved wife, Barbara (Baker) Lukens. Together, they raised their children—William Lukens (Susan), Rebecca Overton, Elizabeth Azan (Andrew), Barbara J. Mikhail(Gavin), and Keith Lukens (Abby) - instilling in them the same values of hard work that guided Larry throughout his life. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Madison Lukens, Jack Lukens, Drew Azan, Benjamin Azan, Fiona Mikhail,Renn Mikhail, Raife Mikhail, Holden Lukens, and Charlie Lukens. He is also survived by his sisters, Marilyn Doyal (Guy), Carolyn Scheuer, and Julie Meek (Ted). His love for his family knew no bounds and he passed with great joy and gratitude for the loving relationships he had with his nieces and nephews along with numerous Lukens – lineage family members and friends who were touched and influenced by his life.
Larry had a passion for life that extended beyond his professional achievements. He found immense joy in fishing with his children and grandchildren, creating lasting memories on the water that they will treasure forever. His warm spirit and love for his family will be dearly missed.
As we remember Larry, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life committed to family, a pioneering spirit in the energy sector, and a steadfast belief in the potential for a better tomorrow. We honor his memory and the profound impact he had on all who were fortunate enough to know him.
The burial will take place the week of May 25th, 2025, at Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery 7931 McCrory Ln, Nashville, TN 37221. The Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, May 31, 2025, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Rathskeller Upper Ballroom Indianapolis, Indiana.
