Lucy Jeanette Duke Simmons passed from this world to be with the Lord on December 30, 2017, after 77 years of a life filled with love and beauty.
She shared her warm, positive spirit with all along her path. As an adult, she lived briefly in California, and most recently in Chattanooga, TN; but Nashville was always home. Born in Charlotte, TN, she was raised in the Presbyterian faith by a devoted Christian mother, however, Lucy loved the Lord and worshipped regularly attending church across most every denomination. Her love of music was lifelong, singing in the choir, piano lessons, listening to WSM and attending the symphony.
She appreciated beautiful things - antiques, pictures, anything that was pretty and made her home warm. She loved fresh flowers inside and working in her flower gardens outside. She was never short of ideas on how to make things look better.
Lucy also loved clothes and fashion. Department store or thrift store, made no difference. She enjoyed dressing up, accessorizing with jewelry and scarves, sewing, and embellishing things. She could tell you what she wore on any occasion or to any event even years afterwards.
She retired from being a hairstylist and salon manager. She also gave of herself by organizing and picking up food donations for distribution by the church. She enjoyed traveling, reading, Broadway shows and took up golf later in life to spend more time with her daughter.
Lucy was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend embracing each role with steadfast devotion. She is proceeded in death by her mother, Elsie Othera Sesler Duke, father Omer Thomas Duke, sister Mary Thomas Duke Hodge, brother Johnny Harold Duke, and husband Gary Eston Simmons.
She is survived by her only child Dr. Laurie Renee Hodge, Chattanooga, TN, her pride and joy; whom she loved beyond measure. She is also survived by sister-in-law Ellen Hawkins (Joe), Woodbury, TN, niece Mitzi D.
