Marie Elizabeth Summers Cox passed away February 9, 2021 in Huntsville, Alabama at the age of 89, following a brief illness.
Born September 9, 1931 in St. Louis, Missouri to the late Elmer John Summers and Hilda Kuhlenengelken, Marie and her parents moved to Nashville where she lived for over 85 years. In addition to her parents, Marie is preceded in death by her devoted husband of 60 years, Karl “Tink” Douglas Cox, Jr.
She is survived by her four children, Karla Cafarelli of Sonoita, Arizona; Karl D. Cox, III (Lisa Young) of Redondo Beach, California; Teresa Conklin (Neal) of Burns, Tennessee; Shelly Harris (Danny) of Huntsville, Alabama; two grandchildren, Alex Conklin (Laura) of Burns, Tennessee, and William Scott of Chattanooga, Tennessee; and one great-grandchild, Kenzlee Conklin of Burns, Tennessee.
Marie served as a member of the School Mother’s Patrol for St. Henry Elementary School for several years and later worked at Castner-Knott department store for 26 years. Following her retirement, she volunteered at Saint Thomas West Hospital as a Pink Lady, delivering cards and flowers to the patients. She was a long time member of St. Henry Catholic Church but never passed up a chance to attend other church services and bible study groups with her many friends at The Meadows and NHC at the Trace.
She made fast friends with total strangers with her outgoing personality and quick wit, and loved to make people laugh with her extensive catalog of jokes.
A Celebration of Marie’s Life will be held on Tuesday October 4th, 2022 at Harpeth Hills Funeral Home at 11:30am. Visitation with the family will begin prior to the service at 10:00am until 11:30am. Family burial to follow at Middle Tennessee Veteran’s Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made in Marie’s name to the Nashville Humane Association or to Huntsville Hospital Foundation, designated to the Hospice Family Care fund, 801 Clinton Avenue East, Huntsville, AL 35801, or made online at huntsvillehospitalfoundation.org.
