Mary Doster, the former Mary Hammack, died on February 13, 2022. She was born in Kentucky in 1929, daughter of Mary Ware Dickinson and Robert Ashton Hammack. Her brother, William Dickinson Hammack, was killed in World War II. Her sister, Mildred Jacob, lives in Meridian, Mississippi. She was married for 61 years to Dr. Robert T. Doster, who died in 2010.
She is survived by her beloved children, Dr. Leslie Jones (Dr. Larry), Lisa Green (Dr. Daniel), and Robert Doster III (Lisa); grandchildren Katherine Michalik (Joe), Matthew Doster (Lindsey), Daniel Green Jr. (Amber), Houston Jones, Cole Doster (Meg), and Jonathan Jones; and great-grandchildren Caroline, James, Emmaline, and Beau Michalik; Oliver Doster; and Gemma Green.
She received Bachelor’s and Master's degrees in Romance Languages at Vanderbilt University, and the study of languages always remained her passion. She worked briefly at the Library of Congress and as a teacher in Memphis City Schools. She was active in the Medical Auxiliary, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in Tennessee, and the Centennial Club. She was a teacher and/or student of the Bible throughout her adult life and was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church, where she was active in world missions.
Mary and Bob traveled extensively in Europe and America, and they especially loved their beach trips with their family. Mary was an avid reader and amateur wordsmith. Above all else, she treasured her family and her Savior.
There will be a public visitation at Christ Presbyterian Church on Friday, Feb. 18, from 4:30 until 6 p.m., followed by a private graveside service on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mission to the World (mtw.org) or the Salvation Army.
