Mary Eagle Keith, age 96, of Nashville, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2021. She was born on May 18,1925 in Knoxville, Tennessee to her proud parents, William Henry Eagle and Mary Lucile McBath Eagle.
Mary was known for her generosity, hospitality, humility, kindness, and love. She was revered and beloved by all who knew her. “Mother Mary”, “Saint Mary”, “Grammie” and “Mom” were just a few of the endearing names in which she was referred. These were significant because the humility and grace in which she served, not only her family, but those that might not have anyone close, and were a beautiful example that hospitality and kindness knew no boundaries.
There was beauty, honor, and elegance in how she was seen. She modeled how to be grateful, respectful, loyal, helpful, graceful, humble, kind, patient, and loving simply by watching her life. More than anything, she didn’t want anyone to feel alone and, therefore, there was always an invitation and seat at her table.
She had such pride and joy in her family and friends. As a woman in the early 1940s, Mary attended Ward Belmont and Vanderbilt University and was a lifetime member of Chi Omega sorority. While attending Vandy she met and married George Keith, Jr. and they enjoyed 53 years together. She delighted in their ever-expanding family of five children and later welcomed spouses, grandchildren, and great grandchildren with open arms throughout her years.
She was a loyal, faithful, and beloved member of Woodmont Christian Church and involved in countless ministries throughout the years. One of the greatest ways she poured out her life was birthed from a season of heartbreak. In 1988, after the tragic loss of her daughter, Elizabeth Anne, “Walk Through Bethlehem” became a gift and a reminder to the community that Christ didn’t leave us alone, but came down and is always near. This still remains a flagship ministry at Woodmont during the Christmas holidays and continues to be a light and encouragement to all who attend.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, George Keith, Jr.; and daughter, Elizabeth Anne Keith. Left to cherish her memory are her four children George Keith, III (Polly), Buzzy Keith (Bitsy), Susie Keith, Lelia Bruun (Erik), as well as seven grandchildren and their spouses; and eleven great grandchildren.
The celebration of life service will be held at Woodmont Christian Church on Friday, October 29, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. with Clay and Roy Stauffer officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the Gathering Hall from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
