He was born February 24, 1947, Mac’s journey took him from Iran to Russia to Germany and ultimately his home in Nashville, where he spent over 50 years of his life. Mac was not just an accomplished man in his field; he was a pioneer in steel. His career spanned multiple steel mills, showcasing his expertise and tenacity. He played a crucial role in helping to open the Azovstal steel plant in Ukraine, an endeavor that reflected his pioneering spirit and commitment to his craft. Sadly, even as Mac’s legacy in steel was cemented, so too was the fate of the Azovstal plant, a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by many.
In his later years, Mac embraced a new chapter by taking on a different kind of adventure as a taxi driver in Nashville. This role allowed him to connect with people from all walks of life, sharing stories, insights, and laughter. He had an uncanny ability to make every passenger feel at ease, chatting about the world, current events, or simply enjoying the silence together.
Mac's academic journey was equally impressive, marked by his pursuit of knowledge and understanding. He attended institutions such as the University of Vanderbilt, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Moscow, and finally, University of Tehran, where he attained his Doctorate in Metallurgy. This academic excellence paralleled his unwavering commitment to fitness and wellness. Mac was an avid member of the Green Hills YMCA, demonstrating his passion for health through regular workouts and long bike rides along the scenic greenways of West Nashville. He found joy in walking his neighborhood, embracing the beauty of the outdoors, and staying connected to the community he loved. His fondness for airplanes and flying led him to obtain his private pilot license, allowing him the joy of exploring new cities from above—a testament to his adventurous spirit.
Perhaps one of Mac's most treasured roles was that of a father to his son, Michael (Daria) Tavana. An example of the strength of family ties that Mac held dear throughout his life. It is through this relationship that Mac's legacy will be carried on.
