Michael Matthews, born on May 19, 1953, in Tripoli, Libya, passed away on December 13, 2024, in Dickson, Tennessee. He was a dedicated veteran who served with honor for 41 years as a Master Sergeant E8 in the Tennessee National Guard, where he became a mentor to countless young soldiers, guiding them through their military careers with wisdom and patience.
Preceded in death by father BG King Charles Matthews; mother Eileen Peebles Matthews; brother King Charles Matthews Jr.; father-in-law Frank H. Carter, Sr. and mother-in-law Dolly Carter.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years Betty Carter Matthews; children Leanne (Hunter) Galloway, Laura (Alex) Conklin; grandchildren Reese, Reagan, Kenzlee, Emmitt as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends who will continue to cherish the memories of his profound impact on their lives.
Michael received his education at Peabody Demonstration School and Cumberland University, which nurtured his intellect and shaped his character. His commitment to service extended beyond his military duties; he was a passionate advocate of patriotism and an active participant in community events.
A man of many interests, Michael loved his family profoundly, including his beloved animals, Chase and River. His enthusiasm for life was evident in his various hobbies—he was an expert marksman and a certified storm spotter, always aware of the skies. An avid Vanderbilt fan, he could often be seen cheering for his team. Additionally, Michael had a remarkable collection of retired flags, a testament to his reverence for the nation, and he had a profound admiration for the Blue Angels.
Michael rightly took pride in his journey from being a city boy to embracing the joys of farm life, which he came to love deeply. Throughout his life, he engaged in photography, capturing the beauty of wildlife through his lens—a reflection of his appreciation for nature.
His legacy is one of service, dedication, and love.
Honorary pallbearers include Jeff Content, Mickey Forshay, Joe Fizer, Randy Sauer, Phyllis Thomas, Chris Harris, Dave Vecchio, Charloette Vechio.
Active pallbearers include Alex Conklin, Hunter Galloway, Daryl Highfield, Richie Edwards, Baron Edwards, Landon Myers.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Dickson County Humane Society, Wreaths Across America and Samaritans Purse.
Visitation will be Monday, December 23, 2024 9:00am- 12:30pm at Harpeth Hills Funeral Home the Celebration of Life will immediately follow at 1:00pm at Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.
