Newton MacLeod, 96, died peacefully at his home February 8.

Newt was born in Quincy MA to Newton and Effie MacKenzie MacLeod.

He earned an academic scholarship to Harvard and graduated cum laude in Economics in 1940.

Newt worked for United Shoe Machinery prior to enlisting in the Marines in 1942 where he served in the pacific during WWII, earning the rank of Lieutenant Major. After the war, he moved with United Shoe to Nashville where he met, was dazzled by and married Peggy Wells from Mayfield KY.

He worked for Genesco from 1960 until his retirement. Newt began working at age 12 to help support his family and spent the rest of his life demonstrating his belief that "work is love made visible". He was never happier than when he had a job to do, whether cutting grass, washing your car, or "kalooping" with his grandchildren. His self-discipline was an inspiration to all who knew him.

A member of the YMCA over 70 years, he both swam and lifted weights twice weekly until age 89.

Newt was a devoted husband to Peg and a fabulous father to Bruce and Kathy Kluemper (Tom). His very favorite "job" was being an extraordinary "Poppa" to Lauren, Alex (Brooke) and Chase (Jennifer) and "Big Poppa" to Cliff Thomas Kluemper. Upon the death of his beloved Peg, he seemed to consider his "work" complete, passing on hours after her memorial service.

Newt is preceded in death by his beloved sister Eleanor MacLeod Foster and survived by his brother Malcolm MacLeod.

Visitation will be at Harpeth Hills Funeral Home Sat., Feb. 21 at 2:00pm with celebration of his life at 3. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to a YMCA near you.
