Nuhad Khayatt

Born in Mosul, Iraq on December 24, 1925

Departed on February 1, 2017 and resided in Nashville, Tennessee

Age 91, February 1, 2017.

Nuhad was the oldest of 4 children. She started her life in the North of Iraq where her father was the commissioner of health for the Kurdish part of the country. She was sent to Baghdad when she was just
6 years old to attend a French Catholic Boarding School where,she would often say with a chuckle,she
made the nuns miserable with her naughty and mischievous behavior.

Nuhad arrived in the U.S.as a very young woman,shortly after the end of WWII to do her graduate work at the University of Iowa. She was one of the first women in Iraq to win a prestigious grant from the United Nations to fund her studies and her travels. In Iowa,she met her future husband,Hazim Alios, and together they would have 6 children and 14 grandchildren. Nuhad taught at the University of Mosul for over 40 years. She was fluent in 5 languages and was beloved by her students.

When she finally returned to live the United States again,she was already in her late 70s- but she was not yet ready for a life of leisure. She prepared a resume,circulated it widely,and obtained work as a translator. Before a series o,f strokes robbd her of speech,she loved to debate and discuss politics, philosophy,religion. The intellect of this vibrant woman was matched only by her passion and her wonderfully wicked wit. I wish you all could have known her then!

The past few years were spent at home,surrounded by caretakers,and those who loved her. And although she lost her ability to talk and then to walk, she never lost her ability to let those around her
know how much she loved them. Dear Nana. We love you too. Hurry back home.

Preceded in death by her husband, Hazim F. Allos.

Survived by her children, Tara Allos (Riyath), Hala Allos (Shawqi), Suhail Allos (Ban), Fateh Allos (Shatha), Saham Allos (Marina), Taimoor Allos (Nagham); 15 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sisters, Huda & Samira

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2017 in the chapel of St. Henry Catholic Church with burial to follow at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Henry. A reception will follow at St. Henry from 2p.m. - 4 p.m.
