Age 87 of Nashville died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on March 26, 2021.
She was preceded in death by parents Helen and Charles Carey; sisters Barbara Verdone and Helen Rosa, husband Edward J. Penney, Jr, son-in-law, Dan Askew (Elaine), and beloved pet canine, “Boo.”
Born in Boston, MA, on March 17,1934.
Mrs. Penney graduated from Mount Saint Joseph Academy and Leland Powers School in Boston MA.
She married Ed Penney in 1955 and began raising a family of seven children while residing in Cochituate and Framingham MA and finally, Nashville. Mrs. Penney worked in Nashville at Buddy Lee Attractions and Payne Furniture Company where she made lifelong friends. She found her true calling by joining the gubernatorial campaign of TN House Speaker Ned McWherter as volunteer coordinator in 1986. She continued her work in the executive press office of Gov. McWherter until 1995 and public service with the Tennessee State Museum as coordinator of the 1996 traveling ‘Tennessee Treasures’ exhibit honoring the state’s bicentennial. Her love of Nashville and Tennessee was matched only by her love of her family and many friends.
Mrs. Penney is survived by children, Linda Floyd (Frank), Edward Penney, Wayne Penney (Julie), Diane Penney, Elaine Askew, Kathleen Penney, Kevin Penney (Patty),11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and treasured friends of the F&M Investment Group.
Mrs. Penney's extraordinary life and legacy will be celebrated at Christ the King Church, 3001 Belmont Blvd, Nashville, TN, on Friday, April 16, 2021 at 12:30pm. Face coverings are requested. Internment will immediately follow in Harpeth Hills Memorial Garden, 9090 Highway 100.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Monroe Carrell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
