Robert “Bob” Paul Guenther, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2024 in Nashville, TN. He was born to Jane and Paul Guenther in Somerville, NJ, on February 1, 1960.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of almost 28 years, Cathy Guenther; sons, Bobby Guenther, Rich (Marsha) Matthai; grandchildren Coleman Matthai, Easton Matthai; sister Lynne Gates; sister-in-law Carole Ann Bach; brother-in-law Ted (Sherry) Bach; nephew Paul (Kristina) Gates; great niece Rayne Gates; aunt Thelma Bonzek; nephews Matt (Liz) Bach, Daniel Bach, and Kevin (Jenny) Bach; lifelong friend John R. Everitt, as well as numerous cousins and friends.
A proud graduate of Rutgers University (Cook College), Bob worked diligently in landscaping during his younger years, helping to put himself through college, demonstrating the tenacity and determination that would characterize his entire career. He later joined the stoploss insurance industry, and worked as an insurance executive for many years.
Bob was not only dedicated to his professional pursuits but was also a great father and husband who always showed up—not just physically, but emotionally and financially. He always supported, loved, and encouraged his family and friends. An avid dog lover, he showed this same behavior to his beloved pets throughout the years, especially family dogs of the past Kimmy and of the current Holly.
He faced multiple health issues during his life but battled them all with a positive attitude and stubbornness to survive. His values of dedication and strength were evident in everything he did, and he nurtured these same qualities in those around him.
Outside of work and family life, Bob had an array of interests that lit up his life. He found joy in boating and fishing, especially with his grandfather, and later with his family and best friend John on the waters of Lake Champlain, where countless unforgettable memories were made. He loved to vacation there, embracing the nature and beauty of the Vermont lakes and mountains. Another Vermont love of his was Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream, a sweet treat that he enjoyed on many occasions.
A bowler and golfer, Bob embraced friendly competition, and his strategic mind thrived during chess games. He and his son Bobby bowled in many leagues throughout the years, a special bonding activity for them. He loved to cook, often preparing enough food to feed a small town. His specialty was lasagna. It was one of the many ways he enjoyed sharing his love for others. He himself loved cheeseburgers more than any other food, and probably could have lived off of them if he had the choice.
Bob was a devoted fan of Rutgers Athletics, often making trips to see the Scarlet Knights play at least once every couple of years. He often sported the Scarlet Knights in his wardrobe, and if not that, was an avid fan and wearer of Tie-dye clothing. He loved to watch Westerns and other movies, was a huge fan of the shows Wicked Tuna, Gold Rush, and Yellowstone, and enjoyed the music of Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, John Denver, and Bruce Springsteen to name a few.
His legacy of nurturing extends beyond his family, too; he embodied a spirit that blended both care and fun, ultimately creating a big Disney family atmosphere full of imagination and joy. Disney was one of his favorite vacation destinations, where he enjoyed sharing the magic with family and friends, and often spoiled those that were able to join. He wore Disney pride not only figuratively, but literally, as that was his other favorite apparel.
In a world that often rushes by, Bob reminded those fortunate enough to know him to pause, enjoy the moment, be grateful for the life they had, cherish connections, and always lead with love. His optimism and perseverance marked that of a man who was grateful for all he had in life, both good and bad. It was something many people admired and recognized within him. He will be deeply missed, but his love, strength, determination, and giant heart will remain etched in the hearts and minds of all who had the privilege to share in his life.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date, as Bob's ashes will have the chance to spend some time at home: something that was important to him. We thank you all for the outpouring of love and support, and will keep those interested updated with these plans moving forward.
