Robert Elmo Chessor went to his heavenly home on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at Alive Hospice in Nashville, Tennessee at the age of 87. Elmo is survived by his children; Teresa (Tommy) Henley, Rhonda (Lynn) Hagar, and Dan Chessor; his sisters, Georgia Moss, and Patsy (Reed) Graham; his grandchildren, Jessica (Adam) Taylor; Eric Hagar; Tiffany (Jonathan) Ethridge, Thomas Henley and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Era Loveless Chessor, of 64 years, parents Harlan and Nettie Chessor and sister, Reba Temple.
Elmo was born on January 18, 1928 in Coble, Tennessee where he learned many farming and carpentry skills from his father. He graduated from Hickman County High School in 1946 and married Era, his high school sweetheart, in 1948. Following high school, he worked at Southern Sportswear in Centerville until 1956. His family then moved to Nashville when he took a job at the Ford Glass Plant as a parts and materials handler where he acquired the nickname "Preacher." He retired in 1992. In 1961, he built a home in Bellevue and lived there until 2014. He was a dedicated provider for his family. At home, he raised calves for years to provide healthy beef for his family in addition to cultivating a large garden and growing fruit and nut trees. He also collected antiques and was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Elmo enjoyed playing the guitar for countless square dances in a trio. At home, he played almost every day for his family. He was a generous individual and dedicated Christian who loved the Lord. Elmo served as a deacon for many years at Pasquo Church of Christ. He continued the legacy of faith passed down for generations through his family to his children and grandchildren. Elmo also instilled a love of education in his children and was adamant that all graduate from college which they did.
A viewing is scheduled for November 20th from 3:30-7:30 pm and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday preceding the service at 10:30 at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens in Bellevue on Hwy 100. Bill McDonald will officiate the ceremony to celebrate his life.
