Robert Magruder

Dr. Robert H. Magruder III was born January 23, 1951 in Nashville, Tennessee. He passed away on August 25, 2024.

Robert is preceded by his parents, Dr. Robert Magruder and Eliza P. Magruder MacLemore; and sister, Brenda Carpenter. 

Robert is survived by wife, Susan Goza Magruder; children, Robert Joshua (Jordan) Magruder, Mary Jennings (Mark) Ray, and Joseph O’Bryan (Sarah) Martin III; six grandsons and granddaughters, Parker Ray, Maryn Ray, Ford Martin, Luke Martin, Emma Ray, Duncan Martin. 

Robert graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy with the Class of 1969. He continued his education at Vanderbilt University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree as a Phi Beta Kappa. Robert then went on to earn his doctorate at Vanderbilt University in Mechanical Engineering.

He began his career at Belmont University in 1984 as a professor of physics, and later retired as the Chair of the Physics and Chemistry Department at Belmont University.

Robert greatly enjoyed his family, water skiing, hunting, and powerlifting. 

Pallbearers include Robert Joshua Magruder, Joseph O’Bryan Martin III, Joseph Crawford Martin, Luke Armistead Martin, William Duncan Martin, Mark Thomas Ray, Parker Thomas Ray, and Charles Andrew Howell V.
