Roland Rudolf Strickert, 89, of Nashville, passed away on April 23, 2016.
He was born in Jackson, Missouri, to the Rev. Henry J. Strickert and Minna Rook Strickert. He graduated from Jackson High School where he played trombone in the band. After high school, Roland served in the U. S. Army in the Philippines at the conclusion of World War II. Subsequently, he earned a B.S. in Mathematics from Southeast Missouri State University and an M.S. in Actuarial Science from the University of Iowa. He later earned the designations of Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and Member of the Financial Executives Institute.
Roland married Waneta Strackbein in 1952 in Iowa City, Iowa, on the day they both earned their Masters degrees. They moved to Nashville, where he began his career with National Life & Accident Insurance Company, now American General Life & Accident. He stayed with the company for his entire career, moving from the Actuarial department to the Comptrollers department, and ultimately becoming Senior VP of Financial Services.
Roland was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, where he served in numerous positions including congregational president, elder, treasurer, and church council member. He passionately supported the Lutheran Hour Ministries, serving on the Board of Governors and as Treasurer and District President. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Concordia Plan Services of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod.
An avid bridge player, Roland was also a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan, a Nashville Sounds fan, and enjoyed bowling, shuffleboard, tennis, golf, and card games.
Roland is survived by his wife of 63 years, Waneta; son Andrew (Janice) Strickert of Nashville; daughters Claudia (Mike) Forde of Durham, NC, Sarah (Corkey) Baker of Hermitage, and Emily (Jeff) Agee of Durham, NC; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister Betty Ruehrdanz of Chicago and brother Robert Strickert of Atlanta.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, David Forde, and four brothers, Walter, Paul, Arthur, and Arnold.
Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Harpeth Hills Funeral Home, 9090 Highway 100, Nashville, and again on Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 5110 Franklin Pike, Nashville.
Services will follow at Our Savior Lutheran Church, on Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m., with burial afterwards at Harpeth Hills.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Lutheran Hour Ministries or to the Henry J. and Minna L. Strickert Scholarship Fund at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri.
