"For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." Philippians 1:21
Samuel Milton Bumpus opened his eyes to the face of his Lord and Savior on July 27, 2019, after a hard-fought battle with leukemia. Born November 10, 1937, in Johnsonville, Tennessee, he spent his adult life in Nashville until moving "out to the country" in Burns, Tennessee, for the past three years. He was a graduate of Waverly Central High School, and the University of Tennessee Knoxville. In 1971 he and a friend founded Bumpus and Hall, CPAs, which over the years grew and became known for the skill and integrity of those who worked there.
He met the love of his life, Joyce, and married her on August 17, 1965. Over the past 54 years they have enjoyed a marriage based on unconditional love and centered around Christ. She has been his rock and has not left his side through this difficult journey of the past 13 months.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Leona Bumpus (Himes). In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving children, Tracey Bumpus and Stan Bumpus, and his much-adored grandson, Samuel "Christian" Anderton, and his wife, Kristin.
He loved Elvis music, St. Louis Cardinals baseball, his iPad, breakfasts at Cracker Barrel, UT football, ice cream for dessert, their cat Punkin, and the TV remote control.
More than anything, Sam Bumpus loved the Lord. Whether it was serving in the church or doing his daily walks wearing a "Jesus Loves You" T-shirt, he lived his life to point others toward Christ. He was a very active member of Forest Hills Baptist Church where he served over the years as an elder, deacon, Sunday School teacher, and official "hugger." He was known for his hugs. You hadn't really been to church unless you got a Sam Bumpus hug.
His family would like to express their thanks to Dr. William Donnellan and his staff at Tennessee Oncology, the wonderful nurses and staff of 3 North at Sarah Cannon Cancer Center, NHC Home Care, and especially the angels of Alive Hospice.
While his family will greatly miss him, we rejoice that he is now completely healed, fully whole, and in the presence of our Savior.
"Well done, good and faithful servant! ... Come and share your master's happiness."
A private burial will be followed by a Celebration of Life service at Forest Hills Baptist Church on Tuesday, July 30, at 2:00pm with visitation one hour prior and a fellowship time afterward.
Pastor Sam Boyd will officiate the service. Pallbearers are Stan Bumpus, Christian Anderton, Wayne Hardy, Reed Dreaden, Morris Dever and Ron Shepherd.
Honorary pallbearers are Gary Sharp, John Thompson, George Bright, Milton Francis, Dickey Lee, the board members of Youth for Christ Nashville, current and former employees of Bumpus Hall/CRI, and the FHBC men's Friday morning Bible study group.
