Sam Caperton Cowan III, age 73, of Nashville, TN, passed away on March 15, 2022, after a short battle with ALS.
Sam was born in Nashville, TN on October 6, 1948. He graduated from MBA and attended the University of Alabama. After a career in IT, he took his wife’s beloved rum cake recipe and started a business, Tennessee Ritzy Cakes, shipping rum cakes to delighted recipients across the globe.
Throughout the his life, Sam donated his time and creativity to numerous local causes, chairing or leading operations for the Italian Street Fair in support of the Nashville Symphony, Action Auction, which benefitted local PBS stations, and many more.
Sam is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Sam C. Cowan Jr. and Elizabeth W. Cowan, and his wife of 45 years, Cathy D. Cowan. He is survived by his two daughters, Emily (Jeremy) C. Cline of Richmond, VA and Catherine (Andrew) C. Dougherty of Nashville, TN; his sister, Lou (Lloyd) C. Stebbins of Winter Haven, FL; brother-in-law David (Sue) M. Dealy of Franklin, TN; grandchildren Art Dougherty, Jack Cline, Sam Cline and Addie Dougherty, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Sam’s life will be held at Harpeth Hills Memorial Gardens on Saturday, March 26, 2022 with visitation beginning at 8:30 AM followed by a service at 10:00 AM.
