Sharron Rene Duncan McFarland passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on January 27, 2019 at the age of 79.
Born in Corpus Christi Texas, Sharron lived with her late husband Colonel (retired) James W. McFarland, Sr., in Columbus, Georgia, Austin, Texas, Munich and Ludwigsburg Germany, Kalamazoo, Michigan, Ft. Lee, Fairfax and Ft. Myers, Virginia, Leavenworth, Kansas, French Camp, California, and Annapolis, Maryland. She moved to Franklin, Tennessee in 2006.
She earned a BA in English and a Master's Degree in Library Science from the University of Texas at Austin. She was elected to Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Phi Mu honor societies.
She retired in 2001 as the first woman Director of the Maryland State Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. She monitored Federal funds for public libraries at the Maryland State Department of Education from 1989-1994. She also was a Supervisor at the NASA Scientific and Technical Information Center and Community Relations Coordinator at the Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library in California. From 1977-1986 she was the head of the National Rehabilitation Information Center library and an Adjunct professor at Catholic University's graduate school of Library Science.
Sharron's community service included being the chair of the Maryland Anne Arundel County Commission on Disability Issues and a secretary of the Kiwanis Club of Annapolis. She also tutored students in reading at elementary schools in Annapolis, Maryland, and Franklin, Tennessee. She was a member of the Williamson County Newcomers Club and the Happy Endings Book Club.
She was the daughter of the late Lawrence Edwin "Bubba" Duncan and Doris Ross Duncan. She is survived by two sons, James McFarland, Jr. (Jayne) of Ft. Worth, Texas and Scott McFarland (Peggy) of Moneta, Virginia, five grand children, Samantha (Jake), Erin (Julien), Kyle, Connor, and Caitlin, and one great grand child, William. Sharron is also survived by her brother-in-law John McFarland of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and sister Lisa Duncan of Houston, Texas.
She was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church, Franklin, Tennessee where she provided communion to home bound members of the congregation.
The family would like to thank the staff of Williamson Medical Center for their caring and compassionate care during her stay in the hospital. The family would also like to thank Pastor Lippard who provided Sharron peace and comfort in her final hours.
