Thomas M. Gorman, M.D.

August 30, 1964 — June 23, 2023

Thomas (“Tom”) Mitchell Gorman passed on to his heavenly home while surrounded by family on Friday, June 23, 2023. Born in Lorain, OH, to Donald and Mary Gorman, he was the youngest of 5 children. His family later moved to Franklin, TN, where he completed junior and senior high, and, despite his Ohio roots, he would be the first to tell you that he was a Southerner through and through. He attended the University of Tennessee and Lipscomb University for his undergraduate studies just long enough to be accepted into University of Tennessee School of Medicine, in Memphis, TN. He graduated medical school in 1990 and accepted a residency in family medicine at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, TN.  Following completion of his residency, Tom, his wife Lisa, and 3 children returned to Franklin, TN, where he served as an emergency room physician at Williamson Medical Center for two decades, a role suited to his passion for helping others. In this role, Tom was able to positively impact many lives in the community through his care and treatment.

With help from friends, family, and the Tennessee Medical Foundation, Tom overcame his struggles with addiction. While he took his recovery one day at a time, he spent the last 11 years in sobriety and devoted himself to his relationship with the lord, teachings of AA, working through his steps, and the mentoring of others in the program.

Over the last years of his life, he had entered the second act of his medical career through volunteering at Faith Family Medical Center, which he thoroughly enjoyed, as it gave him the opportunity to continue helping those in need. For Tom, the practice of medicine was helping others with whatever their affliction or ailment may be. He found great purpose and enjoyment in his work as a physician, in his faith, and in his recovery journey.

A deeply beloved brother, husband, father, and grandfather, he leaves behind his wife, Lisa Gorman, Children: Nate (Andrea) Gorman, Connor (Kristen) Gorman, and Kiera (Elliot) West, 3 grandsons: Arthur & Sheppard Gorman, Wilson West, and 4 siblings: Pat Gorman, Debbie Cohen. Mike Gorman, and Tim Gorman. He also had numerous friends whom he considered family as well as his "granddogs" Levi & Kona. He is fondly remembered by the many names that he answered to, which included (among the ones that are fit for print): “Tommy G,” “Tommy Boy,” and possibly his favorite, “Tom Tom.”

Tom was steadfastly the same person regardless of whether you met him at the hospital, clinic, church, home, in the outdoors, a recovery meeting, or just about anywhere. Tom had many interests and hobbies. While the list could go on infinitely, in addition to being a dedicated family man, Tom was an avid lifelong UT Vols fan, a fisherman, a hunter, an often-frustrated golfer, a youth baseball coach, a fireworks enthusiast, an amateur (and often banned) gokarter while on vacation, and self-professed redneck. He never took himself too seriously and was always willing to serve others. Among the many things that made Tom so dearly cherished, he will be greatly missed for his bright light, big heart, humor, and goofy personality. The family is deeply saddened by the loss of Tom, but they take solace in his unwavering faith, the grace of our heavenly father, and that while this is the closing of a chapter, it is not a goodbye but simply a see you later on the other side.

The family welcomes friends for visitation at Harpeth Hills Memory Garden, Funeral Home located at 9090 TN-100 in Nashville on July 7th from 4 pm to 7 pm as well for service of life on July 8th at 11 to 12 with service 12 to 1 pm. Both the visitation and the service will take place at The Pavilion at Harpeth Hills.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating to Tennessee Medical Foundation or Faith Family Medical Center so that these organizations can continue Tom’s legacy of empathy and healing for all walks of life. Additionally, if you are a member of One Church Home, Lisa would ask you to consider donating to the benevolence fund in memory of Tom.
