Verna Brooks Akers

November 10, 1927 — May 9, 2024

Verna “Vann” Brooks Akers was born November 10, 1927, in Granada, Mississippi and died May 9th, 2024.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Fresco Gallaher and Bessie Jane Rinehart, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, and 2 husbands, James Lee Brooks (December 8th, 1998) and John Burton Akers (March 26th, 2010).

Vann is survived by her son Larry James Brooks and daughter Jan Brooks Fitzgibbon (William), sister Lucille Anderson of Aurora, Illinois, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Her vibrant personality attracted numerous friends whom she deeply cherished, while her caring nature endeared her friends and others to her. She was an avid gardener and a faithful member of the Robert I Moore Sunday School Class. Spending time with family and friends, playing bridge, bird watching, and staying up late watching old movies were among her joys in life.

After several years in various occupations, including nursing, hat shop ownership/operation and retail clothing sales, she had a lengthy and successful career as a realtor.

Vann found companionship and solace at Harmony at Brentwood, while making friends, sharing laughter and creating new memories, over her final two years.

Visitation will be at Brentwood United Methodist Church on Wednesday, May 15th, from 11-12pm, followed by a church service at 12pm. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to your favorite charities or to Brentwood United Methodist Church or the Church’s Robert I. Moore Sunday School Class.
