Should Children Attend Funeral Services?

Admin • June 28, 2021

Should children play a role during the funeral service at a  funeral home in Rifle, CO ? That’s an important question worthy of some consideration.
The first thing to consider is whether or not they need to attend at all. If the children are babies who have no idea what’s going on, it might be a good idea to drop them off at a babysitter. But if the children had developed a relationship with the deceased before their passing, then it would be a good idea for them to attend. Here’s a look at what to do if you want to involve children.
Ensure They’re Ready:  If your children have never before attended a funeral, it makes sense to let them know what a funeral service is. Considering their age and comprehension level, explain what will happen at the funeral service and what the funeral service is important.
Let Them Decide Whether to Attend:  You should also give them a choice as to whether or not they attend. And if they do go to the funeral service, let them determine if they want to play a role during the service. When your children do let you know their preferences, ensure you honor their decisions. For instance, you won’t want to decide for them and then – when they’re older – find that they regret that they hadn’t been allowed to make their own choices.
Let Them Participate During the Funeral Service…if They Want to

You should also allow them to participate during the funeral service – if they want to participate. If they just want to attend without playing a formal role, then let them do so. If they do want to attend, suggest some things they can do. For instance, they can greet attendees in the foyer, help people to find seats, play a musical rendition, or do something else they’re comfortable with.
Allow Them to Help Plan Reception

Will there be a reception? In these strange times of the coronavirus, you should limit receptions to members of your own household. If you’ll hold one – perhaps at your own home – you can allow the children to help plan the reception. They can also help prepare the food if they’re old enough. Preparing things that the deceased had enjoyed can make the reception extra special.

Allow for a Substitute Ceremony

What if your children are either too young to get anything out of the service or are uncomfortable about attending? You could hold a substitute ceremony or event especially for them. This might involve creating a flower garden on your property. Did the deceased have a favorite type of flower? You and your children can plant this special variety, and take a moment to reflect.
